1500V Supercapacitor Cluster Discharge Resistor Cabinet for Safe 30-Minute Continuous Discharge 1000V-2000V

1500V Supercapacitor Cluster Discharge Resistor Cabinet for Safe 30-Minute Continuous Discharge 1000V-2000V

Huaxing Introduces 1500V Supercapacitor Cluster Discharge Resistor Cabinet

Shaanxi Huaxing Technology has added a dedicated DC discharge resistor cabinet to its HRR and PL load cabinet family, engineered for supercapacitor clusters operating between 1000V and 2000V DC. The new cabinet is designed around one requirement that general-purpose load banks handle poorly: a safe, uninterrupted 30-minute continuous discharge at rated current, without thermal runaway in the resistor element or drift in the resistance value.

Why Continuous Discharge Needs a Different Cabinet

Most load cabinets on the market are specified around short pulse duty, typically a few seconds to one minute. A supercapacitor cluster in a test bench or a maintenance scenario behaves differently. After a functional test, the cluster holds a large amount of energy that must be removed in a controlled way before the bus can be touched, and the discharge may need to run for tens of minutes at a stable current rather than in a single dump. That changes the thermal design of the cabinet completely.

  • Continuous thermal margin: the resistor element must dissipate rated power indefinitely, not just for one pulse. Element wire section, former material and the distance between turns are all sized for steady-state temperature rise, not for a transient.
  • Stable resistance: a discharge that runs for 30 minutes is only repeatable if the resistance stays inside tolerance as the winding heats up. Huaxing controls this with low temperature coefficient resistance wire and a mechanical support structure that lets each tube expand freely.
  • Insulation at 2000V DC: the cabinet covers the full 1000V to 2000V cluster range, so clearances, creepage and bushing selection follow the higher end of that window rather than the nominal 1500V point.
  • Operator safety: discharge is a live operation carried out by technicians. Earthing, terminal shrouding, cable entry and clear status indication are part of the cabinet, not an afterthought.

Design Highlights

  • Modular resistor stack: the cabinet is assembled from PL-series and HRR-series resistor units, so the total power and resistance can be configured to the cluster capacitance and the required discharge time instead of forcing the customer into a fixed rating.
  • Forced air cooling: axial fans draw air across the full length of every resistor tube, keeping the winding temperature uniform and avoiding the hot spots that appear when airflow is blocked at the centre of a dense stack.
  • Verified dielectric strength: each cabinet is routine tested at 5500 Vac for one minute with no breakdown or arcing before shipment, giving a wide margin above the 2000V DC working voltage.
  • Scalable platform: where higher energy has to be absorbed, the same design language extends to HRR-BX load cabinets (up to 50 kW continuous, 200 kW for 20 seconds) and to WTC water-cooled braking loads up to 1.14 MW for megawatt-level duty.

Typical Configuration

ParameterRange
Cluster voltage1000V to 2000V DC
Duty30 minutes continuous discharge at rated current
Resistor unitsPL series tubular units, HRR series chip and tubular units
Resistance tolerance±5% or ±10% on request
CoolingForced air cooling, water cooling available on WTC platform
Dielectric withstand5500 Vac, 1 minute, no breakdown or arcing
OptionsMulti-tap resistance, thermal switch, current metering, IP-rated enclosure

Where It Is Used

The cabinet is aimed at supercapacitor test benches, rail and metro traction energy storage, port RTG and crane regenerative systems, UPS and wind pitch control, and any application where a 1500V class capacitor bank has to be brought to zero volts in a defined time. Because the discharge time is set by the resistance value, Huaxing quotes the cabinet from three inputs: cluster capacitance, maximum voltage and target discharge time.

Selection Guidance

The stored energy of a supercapacitor cluster follows E = ½CV², and the discharge current at any instant is V/R. Doubling the voltage quadruples the energy that the resistor has to absorb, which is why a cabinet rated at 1000V cannot simply be pushed to 2000V. Huaxing engineers size the resistor stack against the worst-case energy and then verify the thermal behaviour over the full 30-minute duty before the design is released.

Availability

The 1500V supercapacitor cluster discharge resistor cabinet is available to order now, with configurable power, resistance and voltage class. Huaxing has manufactured power resistors since 1997 and exports more than 60% of its production. Contact the engineering team with your cluster capacitance, voltage range and required discharge time for a specification and quotation.
